Your First Work Contract in Finland

Understand contract types, probation, payslips, and who can help.

Contract types

Employment contracts are typically permanent, fixed-term, or zero-hours. Permanent, full-time contracts are the norm — fixed-term contracts must have a justified reason.

Key terms: hours, salary, probation, overtime

Most collective agreements set minimum pay and standard hours (often 37.5–40/week). Probation periods usually last up to six months, and overtime must be compensated according to law or your sector's collective agreement.

Payslips & tax card basics

Your employer needs a valid tax card to withhold the correct tax. Payslips list gross pay, tax withheld, pension and unemployment contributions, and net pay — check them each month.

Your rights & where to get help

Trade unions, occupational health services, and the Occupational Safety and Health Authority can all help if something feels wrong with your contract or workplace.
